Days Without A Course...

SFDGC Weekly Handicapped Round

The San Francisco Disc Golf Club hosts a weekly handicapped round of disc golf in Golden Gate Park every Sunday morning. The tee times are between 9:00am - 10:00am during the summer months. Entry fees are $5, of which $4 goes to the pot, and $1 goes to the ace pool. Players have to play for 3 weeks to establish their handicap, and only players with a handicap are eligible to win, place or show.

Handicap explanation

For the Summer Season 2004 we implemented a new handicap system addresses two of the biggest concerns with the old handicap system:

  1. 'Hard' safari layouts unfairly pad the handicaps of those who played them.
  2. Creating a level playing field so that beginners can compete against expert golfers while discouraging intentional padding of players' handicaps.

In the new system, everyone's score is based on the Median, or average score, for that day . If it is a hard layout, the median will be high. If it is an easy layout, the median will be low.

Your score for any given day is called the Relative Score , and is calculated by taking your score minus the Median of all scores that week. The median score is essentially par for that week. Your RS will be a positive or negative number that shows how many strokes away from par you are. This allows for safari layouts without destroying the handicap system. This also gives an accurate par number for any given layout.

Your Relative Score and your Standard Deviation are used to determine your Adjusted Score (AS) for the day. Standard Deviation is a measure of how much your golf fluctuates, and is calculated by by taking your highest score, subtracting your lowest score & then dividing by your total number of scores.

Your Adjusted Score is calculated by taking your Relative Score minus the Mean Relative Score divided by your Standard Deviation (STD). In other words, How far above or below par you were for the day minus the average everyone else shot above or below par, divided by your average fluctuation.

Still confused & just want to know how you should play your rounds? To cash, you need to shoot consistent or better than your average. So even if you are not having a good round, you need to not let the round get to away from you. For this will affect your STD and will make it harder for you to win in future weeks.

You can download a spreadsheet with the complete handicapping system by clicking here and opting to save it to your hard drive. You can also right click and choose to "Save Target As." This system will make more sense once people play it a lot, so get out there and shoot already.
