neither. He will be a good, not great, acquisition by the Giants. Good pitcher's park, so he'll have decent stats. But he's not an overpowering pitcher like a Schmidt so I don't think he's a true #1 ace.

My prediction is that Zito will be a solid and reliable starter for the Giants, which is exactly what the staff needed. Jason Schmidt was a great pitcher for the Giants and he really does leave a void that had to be filled. But Schmidt is 5 or 6 years older than Barry Zito, and as much as I liked Schmidt (totla gamer, great pace on the mound, lots of exciting strikeouts in tense situations, good clubhouse guy, etc...), I hope he fades badly in L.A.!

Zito appears to be ready for the prime of his career. He is in good shape (pending his physical, of course!), he's a smart guy with a terrific lefty curve, and he takes the mound consistently. I'm really glad the Giants acquired him.

With all the Giants money spent on those two, they might cancel one another out. In that case the Giants barely miss the playoffs again.

But next year, watch out!
