| The San Francisco Disc Golf Club is working on building an 18 hole disc golf course in San Francisco’s beautiful McLaren Park! The Disc Golf community here in SF knows that this will be an wonderful addition to the park. The SFDGC originally was granted permission to build the course when the Golden Gate Park course was approved, and is currently moving forward on making sure it gets put in.
BUT! The SFDGC’s efforts are not without opposition. There are people in the community surrounding McLaren park who think that the area is not appropriate for sharing across a variety of uses! We, as the disc golf community here in SF, need to band together and let people know that McLaren park is perfect for variety of activities! So, you’re asking yourself, how do I get involved? Well there are many ways to help out! Please start by clicking the badge to the right and becoming a fan of Share McLaren Park on facebook. Then, here are a few more great ways to get involved: 1. Write the City:Send an E-mail to the Parks Commision -The opposition is working hard to make their voice heard with the Parks Commission, which has the final word on the disc golf in McLaren Park Please take a few minutes and write them an e-mail to let them know you would like to see a disc golf course in McLaren Park. Below there is a sample letter, but we encourage you to send your own thoughts on why a course in McLaren would be a great addition. Please cc us at “jeffery at sfdiscgolf.org”:
Send an E-mail Supervisor John Avalos -Supervisor Avalos has been working with Rec & Park along with various members of the community to find a compromise solution. Please take a few minutes and write him an e-mail to let him know you would like to see a disc golf course in McLaren Park. Here is a sample letter, although we encourage you to send your own thoughts on why a course in McLaren would be a great addition. Please cc us at “jeffery at sfdiscgolf.org”:
2. Collect SignaturesThe opposition is trying to collect 1,200 signatures to show there is strong support against the course. We need to counter this with at least 1,200 signatures of our own. This means we need everyone out there collecting signatures from their friends, neighbors, coworkers, family and fellow disc golfers. Heading out to the course to play a round? Print out a few sheets and collect some signatures. We will then present these signatures to various city officials as a sign of the demand for disc golf in San Francisco. Please print out the forms here. (links to a PDF) When you have collected signatures, please E-mail “jeffery at sfdiscgolf.org” to find out where to send them. 3. Sign the Online PetitionA friend of the SFDGC has been kind enough to put up an online petition to support disc golf in SF at the Credo Action Network, on Change.org. Please check out, and sign, the petition here. 4. Attend the Club Meetings/Weekly/Work PartiesPart of building the McLaren course is maintaining the Golden Gate Park course, and getting involved with the disc golf community. There are a ton of great ways to get involved in this, as well! Attend the SFDGC Meetings, and the SFDGC Work Parties. Keep an eye on the Blog for the dates and times for these events! And if you haven’t come out and tried it already, attend the Weekly Tournament. It’s a great way to get involved with the club, and meet other members! 5. Join the Club! This one is SUPER easy. If you are not yet a member for 2010, please become one today. For a small membership fee you get a 2010 bag tag, discounts on club discs, and all of the money is used for maintenance the Golden Gate Disc Golf Course and construction of the McLaren Park Disc Golf Course. |
